Smell Gas in Your House? What to Do and Who to Call

By the Ironwood Plumbing OC team · Updated 2026-11-02 · Plumbing tips for California homeowners

Natural gas has a rotten-egg odor added so you can detect leaks. If you smell it, act immediately.

Get out first

Leave the house with everyone, including pets. Do not flip light switches, use phones inside, or start cars in an attached garage.

Call the gas utility's emergency line

From outside, call your utility. They will shut off the meter if needed.

Then call a gas leak plumber

Once the utility clears the meter, the leak in your lines or appliances still has to be found and fixed. Our gas leak plumbers use electronic detectors and pressure testing, then make the gas line repair and relight your appliances.

Prevent the next one

Old black iron pipe, loose flex connectors and corroded fittings are the usual causes. An annual plumbing inspection includes a gas check.
