What to Do When a Pipe Bursts: A Step-by-Step Emergency Guide
A burst pipe can release hundreds of gallons an hour. Acting in the first five minutes makes the difference between a repair and a renovation.
1. Shut off the main water valve
It is usually near the street in a box, or where the pipe enters the house. Turn it clockwise. Everyone in the household should know where it is.
2. Turn off the water heater
With the supply off, the tank can overheat. Switch gas units to "pilot" and flip the breaker for electric units.
3. Open faucets to drain the lines
This relieves pressure and stops the flow from the break.
4. Cut power if water is near outlets
Water and electricity do not mix. Shut off the breaker for affected rooms.
5. Call an emergency plumber
Our burst pipe repair team responds 24/7 across California. We cut out the failed section, replace it, pressure-test the system and check for other weak spots.
6. Document everything
Photos and video help your insurance claim. We provide a written diagnosis and invoice. For slow leaks found afterward, our water leak repair team can help.
