Water Heater Repair vs Replacement: How to Decide
Every week we help California homeowners decide whether to repair or replace a water heater. Here is the framework we use.
Repair when…
The unit is under 10 years old, the tank is not leaking, and the problem is a single component: thermostat, element, thermocouple, gas valve, T&P valve or anode rod. Those repairs are fast and affordable through water heater repair.
Replace when…
The tank itself is leaking (it cannot be repaired), the unit is 10–15 years old, repairs are becoming frequent, or your energy bills keep climbing. Water heater replacement is usually completed the same day.
The 50% rule
If a repair costs more than half the price of a new unit and the heater is past mid-life, replace it.
